NEOGEN Lysine Iron Agar, 500 g
Lysine Iron Agar is used for the differentiation of microorganisms on the basis of lysine decarboxylase and hydrogen sulfide production. Lysine Iron Agar is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Lysine Iron Agar is prepared according to the formulation of Edwards and Fife, who developed the medium to detect Salmonella arizonae. S. arizonae ferments lactose rapidly, and the authors found expected H2S production on Triple Sugar Iron Agar was suppressed. Detection of S. arizonae is important because it has been implicated in food borne infections. By eliminating lactose and incorporating lysine, Edwards and Fife devised a medium differentiating enteric bacilli based on their ability to decarboxylate or deaminate lysine and produce abundant hydrogen sulfide. NEOGEN m-FC Agar, 500 g
m FC Agar is used with rosolic acid for the detection and enumeration of fecal coliforms by membrane filtration in a laboratory setting. m-FC Agar is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Geldreich et al. formulated a medium to enumerate fecal coliforms (FC) using the membrane filter (m) technique without prior enrichment. Many standard method membrane filtration procedures recommend m-FC media for testing water. The American Public Health Association (APHA) specified m-FC media and incubation at 44.5 ± 0.5°C in the fecal coliform procedure and other tests. The Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) specifies m-FC Agar for detecting total coliforms and fecal coliforms in foods. Christensen devised a urea agar medium containing peptone and dextrose that had a reduced buffer content. The medium supported the vigorous growth of many Gram-negative, enteric bacilli and readily permitted observation of urease production. Urea Agar Base may be used as a screening medium (along with Triple Sugar Iron Agar) for the selection of Salmonella and Shigella cultures for serologic classification. Urea Agar Base is also used to detect production of urease by yeast.
